SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER (SRO) PROGRAM

Having a School Resource Officer in a school does not mean that the school is unsafe.

It does mean that the community is taking positive and proactive steps to create orderly, safe, and secure schools.

The Windom Police Department in partnership with the Windom Area School District has a full time officer, Officer Dana Wallace, assigned to the Windom Middle/High School and Winfair Elementary. The SRO receives special training, which includes National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) certifications in school safety and curriculum presentation.

Working hand in hand with the administrators in each school, the SRO assists with finding solutions to problems affecting school children of today.

  PROGRAM CONCEPTS

The School Resource Officer program is based on three concepts: classroom instruction, school safety, and mentoring.

Classroom Instruction

  • Classes for students
  • Parent/teacher workshops
  • In-service training

Campus Safety

The safety aspect of the School Resource Officer program aims to make schools safer, thereby fostering better learning environments. The SRO works with school administrators, teachers, parents, and students to establish and maintain security procedures that emphasize safety and crime prevention.

  • Emergency operations
  • Crime prevention and response
  • Security plans and protocols
  • Security supervision
  • Environment and design review

  Mentoring

SRO’s interact and work with students, parents, teachers, and administrators during the school day, and participates in school-related extra-curricular activities. Informal interaction also provides a good opportunity to reinforce the lessons or answer questions that students were afraid to ask in front of a group.  The  program promotes youth/police interaction, trust and communication, and students often share crucial school safety information with the officer.

  •  Informal interaction
  •  Student activities
  •  Formal mentoring programs

If you have any questions about the program, please feel free to contact the Police Department or Windom Schools Administrators.
