One of the job responsibilities of Windom Police Department is to impound dogs and cats that are out on their own running at large. Please remember it is prohibited for pets to run at large within the City of Windom. If your pet is found running at large, it will be impounded at the Cottonwood Veterinary Clinic.
If your pet is impounded and has a license, the owner will be contacted. If the owner is unknown, a written notice will be posted for five days at City Hall. The notice will describe the pet and the place the pet was found. The pet will be released after impound and daily maintenance fees are paid. The impound fee is a flat fee of $20.00 for a licensed pet and $40.00 for an unlicensed pet. The maintenance fee is $10.00 per day for a licensed pet and $20.00 per day for an unlicensed pet for the period of time the pet is impounded. If the pet does not have a current license, the owner will also be required to purchase a license.
City Code requires pet owners to clean up after their pets. It is unlawful for the owner, or keeper of a dog or cat, to permit the dog or cat to be on public property or the property of another without the owner having in his/her immediate possession a device, or proper receptacle, for the collection and removal of feces.
Violation of the City Code could result in civil fines, together with any handling fee, and cost of any license for such dog or cat not licensed. Further, any violation could be deemed a misdemeanor; and upon conviction, a fine could be imposed of not more than $300 or imprisonment of not more than 90 days, or both.
City Code requires that all dogs and cats over six-months of age must have a license. All City of Windom pet licenses expire on December 31st of each year. To renew or obtain a license for your pet, stop by City Hall at 444 9th Street. The cost to renew your pet license is $8.00 for each unspayed female cat and dog, $5.00 for all other cats and dogs.
Be a responsible pet owner and a good neighbor, don’t let your pet run at large and remember to clean up after your pets.
